Ham operators from the city are providing assistance to the ongoing relief operations in North Karnataka, particularly in Belagavi district. Four members from the city-based Indian-Institute-of-Hams are providing assistance by extending communication support for the ongoing relief operations.

“The Institute of Hams is carrying required radio sets with accessories to extend a communication link for at least 100 km from a fixed location. We are also fitting Ham Radio sets in three department vehicles. The institute is also equipped with a powerful Radio equipment in a SUV, which can act as mobile control station at any given point to cover a radius of at least 30 to 40 km. We are carrying batteries, which can sustain the effor for at least five days,” said S Sathyapal, director, Indian Institute of Hams.

Apart from the members of Indian Institute of Hams, the Department of Posts, Karnataka Circle, is also providing assistance to the relief operations.

According to Sathyapal, this the first time the Department of Posts is using Ham Radio services.
