Jugaad

Jugaad or Juggad is a form of Indian science. It refers to a non-conventional approach through frugal innovation. The idea is somewhat similar to the globally known concept called ‘hack’. Jugaad also refers to innovative fixing, simple creation, use of uncomplicated techniques and common material. Jugaad is now accepted all over the world as a ‘management technique’ and is considered a recognized form of frugal engineering.

Jugaad, many times solves a tough problem quite easily.

Here are 2 practical examples of Jugaad that our Hams carried out.

In the first case, we need a smooth directional movement to Yagi antenna that is to be used to capture moving satellite images. A perfect combination of T and L joints to plastic (PVC) pipes forms a structure that helped the desired smooth, almost 3-dimensional movement very easily.

In the second example, we have to connect the mag-mount antenna (without base) to the base station via a cable having UHF male connectors as usual. But the mag-mount Antenna also has a UHF male connector. So we need a UHF female-female connector which was unavailable at the time. Unfortunately, Soldering is also not possible so Jugaad comes in to play.

We have 2 UHF female connectors. The jugaad of using 4 screws to attach these 2 UHF connectors gave us a very rigid, solid connection and the antenna can be easily installed with absolutely No Loss in the joint.
